Our 5 Days Itinerary in Macau : Guide to Must-Eat (Part 1)

In our recent visit to Macau, the culprit was FOOD! For this trip, we hit tables to enjoy the real taste of Macau somewhere at the corner of an old snack shop or on the street instead of trying our luck at blackjack tables at the casinos to possibly come home with thousand dollars / ringgits richer. The distinctive cuisine available in Macau makes this city a paradise for food lovers like us. This post is dedicated to the food we enjoyed the most in Macau. Our shortlist includes:

Highly Recommendable: Portuguese Egg Tarts (Pastéis de Nata)  
Description: The name Lord Stow’s has become synonymous with the best Portuguese egg tarts in Macau created by Sir Andrew Stows (dubbed as Lord Stow). The egg tarts are torched milky egg custard baked in a crispy and flaky pastry and tasted really superb! The puff pastry was crisp on the outside, and had multitudinous layers of buttery goodness inside. The custard was sweet, eggy, ultra smooth, and piping hot. What more could you ask for? Gone just in two bites!  These famous desserts are a must eat food in Macau, so do not forget to try one before you leave or else you will regret it. Really, really good that it captivates everybody's soul.

Description: For a true yum cha experience, we went to Casa De Cha Long Wa. It’s one of the most popular Cantonese dimsum spot in Macau, with a taste you can never forget. Opened since 1962 by Mr. Ho Fong, this is one place to have a taste of fresh & traditional dim sum with local scene of the red market. This place used to be a popular social venue for bird keepers from 1960s – 80s and now was revived by artists (actors/directors/writers) who turned it into an art incubator and even a drama house. Dim sum here are self-service, so, just feel free to pick your favourites. We ordered some steamed pork bun, shrimp dumplings and few other types of dim sum to fill our empty stomachs.

Highly Recommendable: 3-Flavoured Ice Cream Sandwich - Red Bean Popsicles   Description: Lai Kee was established 70 years ago by the current owner Mr Kong’s grandfather. His grandfather worked in an ice cream factory where he learnt how to produce ice cream. He started his own ice cream business by selling it by the street. The current Lai Kee shop was built 40 years ago. The interior environment was maintained as how it started. Their signature products are their 3 flavoured ice cream sandwich wrapped in a soft wafer and hong dau bing (red bean popsicles). The most popular ice cream flavour goes to mango, coconut and taro. We ordered another version of ice cream sandwich topped with coconut, honeymelon and vanilla flavours.

Highly Recommendable: Dry Shrimp Roe Noodles (Har Ji Meen) – Steamed Ginger Fish Skin  
Description: We then moved on to Rua de Felicidade for the much talked about dry shrimp roe noodles at Cheong Kei Noodle House. There were less than 15 tables inside the shop, so be prepared to queue during peak hours. Sprinkled with generous amount of dry shrimp roe (which are too small to chew but as it breaks down between the teeth, the flavor is surprisingly strong), this simple dish brings mouthful of savoury delights! You’ll definitely like this!

Highly Recommendable: Imported Musang King Durian Ice Cream - Serradura / Sawdust Pudding - Coconut Juice with Sago - Mango Pudding – Chilled Mango Sago Cream with Pamelo –D24 Durian Cake 
Description: And what really brought me down to this little lane was actually for this very well-known dessert shop known as Gelatina Mok Yi Kei. So, the first thing we did was: grab a cup of Gelatina Mok Yi Kei's sawdust pudding. Located right at the corner towards the end of the lane, this dessert shop is famous for these desserts: (i) Imported Musang King durian ice cream and (ii) serradura / sawdust pudding. Serradura / Sawdust Pudding is one of the best snacks of both Portugal and Macau with cookie crumbs layered on top and sweetened, vanilla whipped cream and best eaten with a spoon. Both serradura (sawdust pudding) and musing king durian ice cream are really worth trying and highly recommended! We had to admit though that their durian ice cream is really soft and melt sweetly straight in the mouth with a pleasant mild durian aftertaste. Full of durian aroma indeed!

Highly Recommendable: Pork Chop Bun - Yin Yeung (Mixed Coffee & Tea) Description: When we did research on what to eat in Macau, the pork chop bun kept popping up. And thus, we decided to keep our stomach empty and make our way to Taipa Village for the best Macau pork chop bun which is said to be from Tai Lei Loi Kei. This Macau-style burger consist of a crispy baked baguette with thickly sliced grilled pork meat in between, makes it a truly scrumptious snack. The piece of pork chop is thick, tender and has rich flavourful taste. No sauce, no vegetables, no cheese, no eggs but just meat to enjoy the taste. They baked & start selling these buns every day at 3.00pm until they completely sell out, by 5.00pm. One taste of this, and you will definitely recognize why this is so popular. Porky goodness it really was!

Description: Tucked away in one of Macau’s lively pedestrian back alleys, situated close to Senado Square, Margaret’s Cafe is well known for their great Portuguese egg tarts. Compared to Lord Stow’s egg tart, Margaret’s egg tart has more flaky crust and buttery content. The egg custard filling is equally generous, soft and creamy with their caramelize top although we will say Lord Stow's one tasted richer. This famous egg-custard stuffed pastry with bitter caramel flavor really captivates everyone’s soul. The café also offers various other types of pastries and sandwiches aside from Portuguese egg tarts.

Description: Everyone visiting Macau should not miss paying Koi Kei Bakery a visit. Koi Kei Bakery is the place to get your souvenirs from Macau. Every tourist who visited Macau will leave with big bags of goodies.  We were of no exception. Their almond cookies is a must-buy, lots of almonds and every bite is crunchy! Koi Kei was established in 1997 and initiated the trend of making almond cake and egg rolls immediately upon customer’s request. Currently selling over 300 varieties of product, the most popular items include the almond cake, egg roll, crunchy peanut candy, and fillet of beef and pork. Koi Kei has 14 chain stores in Macau and 6 chain stores in HK, owning their own factory, employing 400 staff and, above all, gaining recognition as the “most popular food souvenir” champion in Macau. So, what was the outcome of our purchases? Ten boxes of Koi Kei almond cookies for relatives & friends and a bag for ourselves. Hehe…

Description: The name Leitaria I Son needs no further introduction. Their milk based pudding and desserts are so well known to travelers. Many are crazy about it, with its soft texture and the unique sweetness of the milk flavor. Remember to try the Ginger Milk Pudding  and “Xiong Pei Tan Nai” (Double Skin Steamed Milk Pudding) -  silky and the taste of milk is so creamy and fresh!

Description: Located at the corner or somewhere on the street along Senado Square, there is a famous waffle and egg puffs (gai dan zai) stall. We read this from several blogspots and noticed that it is a must-try snack in Macau! The banana waffles, being made on the spot was so warm and moist with cripy edges. The stall owner drizzle it with a generous amount of fattening and evil condensed milk and peanut butter sauces. The freshly made egg puffs, so crispy on the outside and soft in the inside, so good to snack on!

Description: Ngao Keo Ka Lei Chon is a Michelin recommended restaurant. This small little restaurant’s frontage is humble looking but there are many regulars going in and out of this restaurant, and it’s a common breakfast spot among Macau locals. This restaurant is famous for their crab roe noodles and pork congee. The flavour of their crab roe is surprisingly rich and creamy as there were a lot of crab roes as toppings, while the noodles are as bouncy as string instruments. It’s a delicacy with Macau’s unique flavor and it’s really worth trying. You’ll definitely like this!

Highly Recommendable:  Wantan Noodles - Sui Kow – Pork & Shrimp Dumpling with Noodles in Soup
Description: Conveniently located at Senado Square, Wong Chi Kei Restaurant is well-known for its wantan noodles. The founder of this shop, Wong Wun Chi, started making noodles back in 1940 from Hua-Yuan master in Canton and opened his first shop in Macau in 1959 in his premise located at Rua de Cinco de Outubro. The shop was previously selected to perform noodle making skills using bamboo stick for the Portuguese President during his official visit here. Their noodles with small shrimp dumplings in oyster sauce or tasty soup made of boiled dried fish really attract travelers with its mouth-watering taste. Their Sui Kow is also one of the popular dishes, with a taste you can never forget. With its thin cover, it is stuffed with minced meat, large clumps of prawns, carrots and water chestnuts that offer a myriad of textures and flavors.

Description: Rua do Cunha, a narrow street in Vila da Taipa is a must visit place, with a few famous local eateries and shops along the street. Seng Cheong Crab Porridge is an old favourite. It expands its business by opening up another branch nearby. We ordered a small portion of the crab congee which was enough for 2 persons. The crab porridge is sweet and silky smooth, cooked with fresh water crab that has a whole crab inside and rich in flavor with the original sweet taste of the fresh crabs’ intact , and bits of crab roe and the crab meat makes it totally outstanding. Just like the Chinese old saying, “You can eat a cow secretly but you can’t eat a crab secretly!”

Highly Recommendable:  Portuguese Boiled Clams with Lemon - Portuguese Baked Duck Rice – African Chicken
Description: Escada Restaurant @ Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (San Ma Lou) is one of the more popular Portuguese restaurant in Macau. Slightly more pricey than other usual restaurants, but well worth a visit for their rendition of Portuguese and Macanese fares. No doubt, Escada Restaurant serves the best Portuguese food in Macau. We ordered the Portuguese Baked Duck Rice and African Chicken. The Baked Duck Rice is one of the best Macanese food and has always been a popular food. Served with duck meat, Portuguese sausage and bacon on top of rice, this dish is surprisingly light and lean. If you’re a fan of duck dishes, you will definitely enjoy it! The African chicken is a traditional Portuguese dish of grilled chicken topped with piri piri sauce, a mix of more than 20 types of pepper and herbs, slightly spicy curry sauce and has its unique taste. We enjoyed the grilled chicken and mixed the baked rice with the piri piri sauce. It’s quite a delicacy. Overall, it was quite a lavish meal for both of us.

Highly Recommendable: Pork Rib Noodles, Wantan Noodles, Tofu Noodles, Chilled Sweetened Bean Curd, Soy Milk  
Description: Ving Kei started its business more than 50 years ago selling soya products. The owner, Mr Lei Kwok Meng came from Panyu to Macau started making tofu in 1956 by carrying two heavy wooden container borne on a bamboo pole over the shoulder. Our typical orders were, a bowl of chilled sweetened bean curd, the soft texture and tofu makes a harmonized flavor. After tasting a bowl of bean curd, we were tempted to try the delicious soy milk. Their deep-fried pork rib noodles are also famous – so crispy and so luscious with a generous amount of meat. Such a humble dish with crunchy flavour. Remember to try their tofu noodles and soy milk (tau cheong) too!

Highly Recommendable: Roasted Pork Rice, BBQ Pork Rice, Roasted Duck Rice, Dimsum
Description: Located near to Almeida Ribeiro (Senado Square), is Hou Keng Fan Tim opened for decades but surprisingly received very few reviews from travel food hunters. We were along the way to St. Lawrence’s Church, and saw this shop was jam-packed with locals and we decided to hop in and give it a try. We ordered the Cantonese-style roasted duck rice. It’s roasted, marinated in starch syrup and has boiling oil poured on it to make the skin turn nice and crispy. Upon biting it, that strong marinated crunchy skin really jumped out. Very appetizing indeed – I’ll rate this 9/10!

Highly Recommendable: Black Pepper Roasted Duck with Rice - Black Pepper Roasted Goose with Rice - BBQ Pork with Rice  
Description: Chan Kong Kei has over 50 years of experience in serving one of the best roasted duck/goose in Macau that is marinated in a special homemade pepper sauce. Most locals will recommend Chan Kong Kei for their roasted goose. This dish is marinated in starch syrup, and cooked over a wooden fire of up to three times, with a special homemade pepper sauce being applied in each time. We arrived there at 7.00pm just in time for dinner and it was super packed during peak eating hours. This Cantonese style dish is really extraordinary – juicy, tasty and tender. Gone in no time! Two thumbs up and a definite must-try if you’re in Macau!
